BRAIN GAIN / BRAIN DRAIN:
Teaching Students to Build a Better Brain
"The wealth of information is incredible. I learned so much and feel like I could easily teach the curriculum. This was terrific --and well worth the time."
C. Siler, Safe and Drug-Free Schools coordinator
This dynamic, hands-on workshop features a comprehensive curriculum, specifically designed by Tim to help teachers grades five through twelve to comfortably and effectively teach about brain development and function. The workshop is offered in a one and two day format.

Brain Gain/Brain Drain takes advantage of the natural curiosity that young people have about their own brains. Twenty-two sequenced lesson plans -- enough for up to four weeks of instruction -- are provided. Each lesson contains engaging information, many great activities, plus accompanying colorful images and engaging graphics on CD-ROM for those who prefer teaching with the aid of PowerPoint. The curriculum traces the unique spiral development of the brain, from bottom to top, inside to outside, side to side, and back to front. Students discover and explore fascinating aspects of brain development and function, taking away a deep appreciation of -- and many "how-to's" for -- building a better brain.

The eleven lessons in volume one,
BrainGain: Teaching Students to Build a Better Brain, include such engaging topics as, The Spiral Journey; Movements That Make Us Smarter; How Stress Dulls the Brain (and What to Do About It); the Role of Water, Diet and Sleep in Building a Better Brain; Gender Differences and the Brain; Why EQ (Emotional Intelligence) Counts More Than IQ -- Developing a Higher EQ; Eight Ways to Super Tune the Brain on Test Day; Creativity: A Key to Optimal Brain Development; Memory Magic; Brain Biorhythms; The Intelligence of the Heart, and much more.

BrainDrain: The Effects of Alcohol and Other Drugs on the Brain, consists of eleven in-depth lessons, each of which makes it abundantly clear exactly how mood altering chemicals -- nicotine, alcohol, and marijuana -- interfere with thinking, mood, memory, motivation, and performance, while damaging the brain and leading to possible addiction. Using the latest scientific information, along with engaging activities and brain images, students get much more than a "Just Say No" approach to one of the most important challenges they face as young adults:  the decision to use (or not!) drugs.

Comments From Participants:
"Districts and governments are constantly trying to define the perfect teacher. We know they exist, yet we just can't put our finger on them. Well, great teachers understand how the brain functions and have the innate ability to tap into the powers of their students brains. You are a master at conveying the keys to unlocking the brain and I am so pleased that I have had a chance to soak a small part of it all in."
T. Smith, Special Education Teacher

"Thanks Tim, for providing the most thorough, useful and stimulating course I've taken in twenty-five years!"
J. Murphy, PE teacher

"The BrainGain/BrainDrain workshop was overwhelmingly the best workshop I have ever attended."
K. Blaser, Elementary teacher

"The information is definitely written at a student's level, even though it's a complicated subject. The hands-on activities are fantastic! I really enjoyed the hands-on activities; it helped me understand what was being taught so much more. The information presented was totally relevant to kids. Excellent -- everything was excellent."
B. Bondioli, School Social Worker

"The style was great. A lot of information was presented in a style that made it very interesting and easier to understand and remember. I walked into the course not knowing what I was going to be involved in, but walked away with thoughts of how to incorporate it into my LD English program."
P. Rezin-Samuelson, LD English

"A positive, upbeat workshop. Much knowledge and good activities."

"Lots of interesting information and I loved all the movement and activity. The curriculum is very friendly to use and interesting as well."
C. Shannon, Title I grade 4/5 math teacher

"Lots of work has been done in an attempt to provide a good reproducable guide for adolescents. This is desparately needed and should be made available to all schools."
