NEW CONNECTIONS:
Support Group Facilitation Workshop
"The format of the workshop was excellent: we had time to both participate in a hands-on manner and contemplate as well. The information provided was very useful to me. Your ideas for group activites will definitely be helpful."
D. Williams, School counselor

New Connections is a school and classroom climate improvement program that helps to foster a community of caring, the bedrock foundation for both successful learning and prevention efforts. The information, skills, and tools taught and learned in the training work well for students of all ages and backgrounds. The program is designed to strengthen connections among students and between teachers and students. Strong social connections and bonding to the school has been found to promote the following:
• School bonding: students commitment to, and engagement in, their
school -- a key factor related to the prevention of drug use
• Student emotional and social intelligence
• Students' interpersonal skills and commitment to positive values
• Classroom and school-wide climate of safety, respect, caring, and
helpfulness
The facilitator workshop takes place over the course of one evening (overview and introduction) and two days. Participants engage in a dynamic learn-by-doing model that helps them build confidence in leading class meeting and a variety of support groups. Topics include: creating a positive climate, resiliency building, stages of group development, goal setting, care-frontation and limit setting, dealing with destructive feelings and thoughts, emotional intelligence, problem solving, and much more.
